A deadline is a useful thing….

Well I have managed to break down some barriers of inertia and now have workable basic tracks for almost all 13 of the tracks onthe ‘olde’ album. Some of these were extracted/ressurected from old programs I have used like Ableton Live and Cubase. These have been succesfully rebirthed and regrooved in Pro tools. Along the way of course I discovered more ’OK’ material that might be worth working on and some which I thought was good  turned out to be ‘average’ so it won’t make the cut. I am off for 5 nights for a ‘holiday’. The portable record rig [read laptop] will follow in a trailer as well as the encyclopedia of lyrics that demand attention.  Should be a nice relaxing time.

Just 12 more sleeps ’til I return to the working world and how far have I got on my quest…..

I said I would have the ‘bones’ for the two albums done by the end of the 107 days. After going through archives and cassettes and even journals from yesteryear! I think I have a final list for the ‘olde’ stuff:

1. Distant galaxy – bones track recorded
2. Myra – bones track in Ableton Live – needs to be redone
3. Lemonade – bones track recorded
4. Someday Someday [Claire] – bones track done
5. If we had a Kombi – bones track in Ableton Live- needs to be redone
6. A lot on your mind – bones track in Cubase to be redone
7. A Hundred times a day [what are U thinking] Bones track done
8. Alone in my room – bones track in ‘live- to be redone
9. Come to their sense – no track yet
10. Life on TV – no tack yet
11. Act Naturally – no track yet [ damn that 11/4 timing!]
12. More than sometimes – Deluxe bones track done
13. You shall be rewarded – no track yet
14. Hungry for some love – bones track in Live [might stay there]

So obviously I need to do some arse moving in the next 12 sleeps to meet target-that doesn’t include the songs for the other album ! That’s about 70% there.

Given that I’m working on 30 or so songs at this moment in time I thought it might be good to finalise a few of them and make an ‘interim’ release – five or six tracks. I’ll mull over which ones I think are close to finished and start bgetting towrdf some sort of finished production… scary stuff… should I set a deadline? Say NOVEMBER?

Album update- July8th

Well I haven’t done one of these for a time so thought I’d fill in some gaps. I got four new songs underway over the last week 3 co-writes and one all of my own making. I’ve been listening to the latest Christine Kane album and she has a song called ‘Virginia’ [ a co write with Steve Seskin] .. it sparked off an idea for a character called ‘Oliver’ a geeky school kid who meets a geeky girl and they get together… cute. I’m also developing an idea for a song on bullying….

Been rehearsing for the performance at Open Studio tonight.. it weil be a lively and intersting gig in what could easily be mistaken for someone’s front room!

I think I might have worked out the best way to approach all this writing/recoding/etc [only took two months!] I call it my W.R.A.P. formula-:
W is for Write- best done between 7.30 am and 12.30- including Object Writing
R is for record by the time I’m past lunch my brain is gluggy but I’m fine for laying tracks and singing
A is for Aquisition- this might mean going for a walk down the street or a drive to a nearby suburb or seeing a film – having a coffee with someone and tossing ideas about, anything that gets ‘new material’ in your brain and senses!
P is for Production. after dinner time this is the time to polish those traks recorded during the afternoon or revisit work on other mixes in progress – usually all wrapping up by ten PM!

This week I’ve worked on structire and lyric for ‘Low maintenance’ [not ready for rough posting yet], ‘a hundred times a day’. Re-discovered a lost song called ‘mostly for you’, re-lyriced ‘More than sometimes’, ‘Another perfect morning’, ‘buried and dead’ and ‘bio bomb’. Just 25 days ’til I’m back to the ‘real’ workface!

Well just 39 Days to go now before I aim to have the ‘backbones’ completed for the two albums – progress is at about 40% so I’m going to have to ramp it up a bit. Last week I did a draft of ‘More than sometimes’- hopefully it will be on the site soon. I also worked on a Nashville rewrite of Mr Perfect, and made some small adjustments to buried and dead- the violin version is on the demo page now. Hoping to record Act Naturally -as soon as I work out how to do an 11/4 beat and sing at the same time! ‘In the name of’ is now digitised and available on I-Tunes- cool.

Just like Sunday

Just like Sunday                    © Paul J Penton March 2009

Lately he’s been dreamin’ about how its gonna be

Sometime in the future there’s a place down by the sea

Fishing’ off the pier, – with his new grandson

Been saving every dollar,  to realise his dream

Been Working at the factory since he was seventeen

Those stacks on the horizon they been a friend to him

Always banked that paycheck There was just enough left

Times were never hard or so it seemed

And that dream ain’t too far away

Where he can live without a care

And every day will be like Sunday

He can do whatever he wants

He can fix the fence

or walk the dogs

learn to dance

or Whittle logs

He can sit out on the porch

’cause every day will be like Sunday

He’s been building up a nest egg up there New York

Somewhere in Manhattan they’re working after dark

growing all his dollars with a million others

they never have a moment to talk

And some financial crisis been comin’ to a head

He hasn’t taken notice of what the papers said

He doesn’t know no-body up at AIG

his dollars keep on growin’ he can see it every day

and that dream’s so much closer now

nothing can stand in its way

and every day will be like Sunday

He can do whatever he wants

he can grow some plants

or brew some hops

He can write freelance

and go for walks

or just sit out on the porch

’cause every day will be like Sunday

He came home on Thursday night and was sorting through the mail

found a yellow envelope it looked just like a bill

as his finger slit the top of it ,

might as well  have been his throat

all that money he’d been building up

had gone

just like a puff of smoke

he didn’t want to believe it

how everything was gone

he didn’t want to let go of his dream

where every day will be like Sunday

He can do whatever he wants

He can fix the fence

He can walk the dogs

He could learn to dance

He can Whittle logs

He can sit out on the porch

’cause every day will be like Sunday

’cause every day will be like Sunday

’cause every day will be like Sunday

’cause every day will be like Sunday

Silent at Last

Author: admin
05 17th, 2009

I wonder what he thinks
As I sit here and confess
And my sins drape over the man of cloth
Will my guilt be silent at last

I was acting like it was my younger days
She was like a flame that held my steady gaze
we ground away like a sack of empty skin and bones
and when we were done she was just some pound of flesh

I wonder what he thinks
As I sit here and confess
And my sins drape over the man of cloth
Will my guilt be silent at last

He’s the king of birth and death and marriage
He’s the one who sealed our right of passage
His soothing words made us feel encouraged
But things ain’t worked out right
In this holy marriage

I should be grateful for the way she’s stuck by me
I know sometimes I can’t be easy
But she’s the only one
I really care about
she’s got every right to be angry?

but when I called I got no answer
When I needed strength Jesus wasn’t there
I’m so sorry for all the  pain I caused her
And now I lay my guilt
Before the altar

I wonder what he thinks
As I sit here and confess
And my sins drape over the man of cloth
and my guilt be silent at last
and my guilt be silent at last
yes my guilt be silent at last

If we had a Kombi

If we had a Kombi © 1998 & 2009 Paul J Penton

If we could just get out of town
Feel the sun with the windows down
Hit high gear and catch a swirling breeze
Breathe in all those fresh green fields
Head out for the purple hills
And leave behind these city wannabes

the only thing that we’d need to do
is pick a  signpost and go
we could leave behind these city blues

If we had a Kombi
We wouldn’t have a problem
We’d be cookin’ on  an open fire By now
And if we had a Kombi
Everything would be fine
We could take to the open road
Any time we liked

Sailing down a sea of tar
We wouldn’t have t work so hard
no deadlines and no demands to meet
Think of all those red sunsets
The stars will be outr happiness
Out there in the bush ther’s no main street

[we could] build a fire cracks and spits
as we stare up at the endlessness
we might find the road that never ends

If we had a Kombi
We wouldn’t have a problem
We’d be cookin’ on  an open fire By now
And if we had a Kombi
Everything would be fine
We could take to the open road
Any time we liked

we could work on all  our dreams
we could just do anything

you and I we been around
you and I been up and down
you and I we been around
you and I been up and down

If we had a Kombi
We wouldn’t have a problem
We’d be cookin’ on  an open fire By now
And if we had a Kombi
Everything would be fine
We could take to the open road
Any time we liked

We could take to the open road
Any time we liked

We could take to the open road
Any time we liked
