Ambulance – daily writing – 15th April
Apr 14th, 2009 | By admin | Category: Daily WritingFrom the distance it grew like a cat being put in a bath, a long screeching high pitched meeow which turned into a siren. In the reflected world of the rear view mirror his eye was caught by the pulsing lights traveling down the wrong side of the road. As much as possible he pulled to the far side but when the ambulance got to Punt Road it was still on the wrong side and had slowed to walking pace, goading the traffic crossing Punt to stop. In thick blocks of red white and blue it almost seemed to be a Picasso painting that had paused next to him. The sight of Kundalini snake on the side caught his eye, the curly serpentine symbol of the medical profession from a bygone era- did they know it was a very close representation of what we now know as the composition of DNA?
Up close the siren pierced the air with electric prongs. The cattle call of cars halted and it made it’s way over the road, the engine racing as the driver stamped on the pedal, it was only another 600 meters to the hospital , but this case obviously needed special attention. On the helipad that arced over Commercial Road the air ambulance sat idly like a perched owl, obviously some other sucker had had to use its services recently . Soon the air would be chopped by the swirling rotors and a thousand bazookas would seem to fire from its motors as it hauled itself into the sky on invisible strings, amazing , how do they fly? In the ambulance the smell of slaves and fresh bandages was cut by the cool morning air and a fresh swel of morning polution….
