It’s a bit of a puzzle that needs to be solved, especially as my weight seems to increase – I puzzle over why I have to clamp the belt in so far in order to get the eye and the needle meet. I breath out and pull those tummy muscles in tight in order to pull the belt in far enough, then with a harrumph! manage to get the slightly curved end of the buckle’s hook to find the slot – mental note – make another notch in the belt – or do more exercise, eat better and get fitter – of course the first choice is the easiest.

It divides your world in two, separating the land masses of your upper and lower body. The well worn brass is muted and cool in hand and the way the pin and buckle knit together is like lovers resting in each others arms. On my old leather satchel I have some buckles; small ones, they make a light metallic chinking sound as I fiddle with their chrome plated exterior guiding the tongues of leather through the curving rollers and piercing skin…..
